SAMPLE STORAGE SYSTEM

FIMM has invested in the set up of a new liquid nitrogen based sample storage facility. This system provides secure and controlled storage of samples in liquid nitrogen vapour phase with an automated storage condition monitoring and recording system. The facility currently has the capasity to store 415 000 samples (in two millimeter cryovials) and a possibility of expanding the capacity in the current room to about 1,2 million samples in cryovials, and much more in smaller volume vessels, e.g., microplates.

By using barcode labelling and a laboratory information management system (LIMS) all samples and processes are traceable. Only authorized persons have access to the sample material.

LIMS SYSTEM

Biobank has adopted a LIMS called SamWise, developed by THL and based on 2D barcoding.  The tailor-made SamWise LIMS database system is designed to cover all steps of the sample flow within the biobank data entry, including recording the arriving samples, sample quality and quantity measurements, sample aliquoting data, sample locations, distribution of the samples and possible exceptions in process, etc.

The sample collection owners who use the facility will be able to view the sample management system of their own collection through separately requested reports, but the sample storage data will be maintained by the Biobank personnel. Strict data confidentiality rules are followed in all processes and operations.
