Why do we need modern biobanks?
The rapid development of new technologies provides new tools for translational medicine. Rapid access to human biological samples and associated phenotype data will be crucial for the successful discovery and development of effective new diagnostics and treatments. This ease of access requires harmonization and professionalism of biobanking procedures, in order to achieve high sample quality, integrity of data and protection of sample donors' data and rights.
Benefits
For researchers:
-
Avoid overlapping sample collections – save money - Better access to samples with associated data – save time
- Maintain higher quality of samples with regulated and monitored storage
For sample collection owners:
- Professional sample storage and data management service
- New collaborations – more publications
For patients / sample donors:
- Data protection issues in focus
- Transparency, information, participation
- Better science – translation from
research to health care
