Arjan van Adrichem, PhD Student
arnoldus.adrichem[at]helsinki.fi
Who? Arjan
What? After receiving his master degree from Eindhoven University of Technology in 2010, Arjan joined the Wennerberg group as an HBGS graduate student.
When? Arrived in Helsinki in January 2011.
Where? From Schipluiden, The Netherlands
Why? Arjan joined FIMM and the Wennerberg group to expand his knowledge in molecular medicine. His studies focus on elucidating the oncogenic function and therapeutic potential of MgcRacGAP.
Sawan Kumar Jha, MSc Student
jha.sawankumar[at]helsinki.fi
Who? Sawan
What? Sawan is pursuing his MSc in Molecular Biosciences (Biochemistry) at the University of Helsinki, Finland and has joined the Wennerberg group as a research assistant.
When? December 2011
Where? From Janakpur, Nepal
Why? Sawan is interested in exploring the molecular mechanisms involved in cancer cell growth and division and the application of these concepts in cancer therapeutics.
Leena Karhinen, Postdoctoral Researcher
leena.karhinen[at]fimm.fi
Who? Leena
Where? From Kitee, Finland.
What? Leena received her PhD in 2005 at the University of Helsinki. After that she moved to the Netherlands for a 2.5 year postdoctoral period at UMC Utrecht, and now works as a postdoctoral researcher in the Wennerberg group.
When? Arrived in Helsinki in autumn 2009 and has been working in the Wennerberg berg group since September 2010.
Why? Leena wants to move from basic cell biological questions towards applied research. She is involved in projects studying the oncogenic role of the Ect2/MKLP1/MgcRacGAP and screening for molecular players involved in malignancy, in breast cancer cells.
Muntasir Mamun Majumder, PhD Student
muntasir.mamun[at]helsinki.fi
Who? Mamun
What? Mamun received his MSc in Pharmacy from Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. He then attended Stockholm University and completed an MSc degree in Toxicology in 2010, working with Thomas Helleday. He was then offered a FIMM-EMBL international PhD position and moved to Finland. Prior to joining the Wennerberg group, he worked with two other research groups at FIMM as a rotation PhD student. Mamun is a now a joint FIMM-EMBL PhD student with the Wennerberg and Heckman/Knowles Groups.
When? Arrived in Helsinki in August 2010
Where? From Dhaka, Bangladesh
Why? Mamun is fascinated by the concept of translational medicine. He joined the Wennerberg Group to expand his knowledge and experience of molecular medicine. His research interest is, in a broad sense, to understand molecular mechanisms of drug sensitivity and resistance, particularly focused on chemotherapy-induced metabolic stress and drug sensitivty.
Tea Pemovska, PhD Student
tea.pemovska[at]helsinki.fi
Who? Tea
What? Following completion of her master studies in Drug Innovation at Utrecht University in the Netherlands in 2010, Tea joined the Wennerberg group as a PhD student.
When? April 2011
Where? From Skopje, Macedonia
Why? Tea joined FIMM and the Wennerberg group to expand her knowledge and experience in molecular medicine, specifically focusing on personalized cancer medicine. Her studies will focus on drug screening of leukemia patient samples in order to elucidate the therapeutic potential of existing approved and experimental oncology drugs for leukemia.
