Medical Systems Biology
Besides the DNA sequence variation, it is important to understand how genes function and how RNAs, proteins, metabolites and other cellular components act together in health and disease. This area of systematic analysis and modeling of cellular functions is called systems biology. The FIMM focus is on medical systems, i.e. using systems biology to understand the pathogenesis of diseases. The major strength of the FIMM medical systems biology research is currently in cancer. The second major topic towards the future revolves around obesity and diabetes.
In cancer research, FIMM has access to globally unique capabilities for molecular profiling, functional cell analysis, bioinformatics, and mathematical modeling, and there is a possibility to develop novel insights on cancer systems biology. Olli Kallioniemi also directs the Centre of Excellence in Translational Genome-Scale Biology, which is a joint effort between VTT and Universities of Turku and Helsinki (www.tgsb.fi). For research on diabetes and obesity, there are globally competitive metabolomic profiling capabilities at VTT Espoo that are available for academic collaborations between FIMM and VTT at Espoo.
Research Groups at FIMM
- Prof. Olli Kallioniemi's research team at FIMM is focussed on the molecular mechanisms of breast and prostate cancer.
