Translational Research
This line of research is at the heart of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine. Also, the key challenge of Finnish biomedical sciences is the translation of innovations to the industry and to the clinic. This gap between basic and clinical/industrial research is widening globally and major efforts to build translational research centres have been started in the EU and USA to bridge basic and clinical research. FIMM plans to develop towards a translational centre with both diagnostics and drug discovery activities.
There are particular strengths and promises in the following areas:
- genetic risk factors for disease
- biomarkers from serum and tissues for diagnosis of cancer
- drugging key cancer pathways
Together, these capabilities formulate a strong base for personalized medicine research, i.e. matching the right patients for the right therapies. This is key towards improving efficacy and costs of health care and delivering the best treatment for each patient.
