File Storage and Transfer
How much space I have for my files? Can I get more space? File backups and restoring data? I need a place to share files with our group or collaborators?
Overview of the FIMM File Storage Area
FIMM provides four different areas a user can store files. All these areas are equally accessible from FIMM Linux, Windows and Linux cluster environments as well as from remote connections. The four different areas are are:
1) Personal home folder (only accessible by the individual user)
- In Linux, it is located in /homes/my_account_name
- In Windows Terminal Servers, this location is mapped as M: letter
- In Windows Terminal Servers, the folder "My Documents" on desktop points to "M:\Documents" (in FIMM Linux this is accordingly /homes/my_account_name/Documents
- The Dekstop between FIMM Linux and Windows are the same, i.e. whatever you have on your WFIMM Windows desktop, are visible on your FIMM Linux desktop and vice versa
- The Desktop is located in M:\Desktop (Windows) and /homes/my_account_name/Desktop (Linux)
- E.g. the home folder structure on FIMM Servers:
Windows:
M: <= Your home folder
|-Documents <= "My Documents" on your Windows desktop
| and the as ~/Documents on Linux)
|-Desktop <= Your desktop (Windows and Linux)
Linux:
~ <= Your home folder
| (/homes/my_account_name;
| same as M: on Windows)
|-Documents <= Your documents folder (same as M:\ and
| "My Documents" on Windows)
|-Desktop <= Your desktop (Windows and Linux)

2) Research group collaborative folder (created automatically for each research group)
- Research group folder is an access restricted storage for members of the reasearch group. It is created automatically for each researrch group that has users in FIMM servers
- In Linux, it is located in /projects/
- In Windows Terminal Servers, the projects folder is mapped as P: letter. The given research group folder is thus located at P:\
.
3) Project collaborative folder (has to be separately created from FIMM User Portal)
- Collaorative project folders provide and easy and secure way to share data between different FIMM users, that do not need to be from same research group, organizartion or even country
- Each user can create collaborative project folders from the FIMM user portal and specify who is to get access to data
- In Linux, it is located in /projects/
- In Windows Terminal Servers, the projects folder is mapped as P: drive. The given project folder is thus located at P:\name of the project>.
4) Public project folder
- In Linux, it is located in /projects/public
- In Windows Terminal Servers, the projects folder is mapped as P: drive. The Public project folder is thus located at P:\public.
All of these are secured, access restricted and backed up regularly. Restorations can be made by contacting the FIMM admins via bbu-support@helsinki.fi.
Transferring Files from/to Your Client to FIMM
Files may be transferred in several ways. Please see instructions on file transfer.
Space Limitations
The default quota for each user is 25 GB (1 GB is 1024 MB). If you need more space, then email bbu-support@helsinki.fi.
Note that this includes all your files, including any that you may have put into collaborative projects folders, your research group collaborative folder etc.
Sharing Files with Other FIMM Users
Sharing with Users Within Your Research Group
In /projects folder there is a access restricted folder for each research group. This folder is located at P:\ (FIMM Windows servers) and /projects/ (FIMM Linux servers).
Sharing with Users in Other Research Groups
A Collaborative project folder can be created for you and all the users of FIMM you wish the share the data from FIMM User Portal. These other users can be from Biomedicum, in other research organizations in Finland or abroad, working with you on this collaborative project. The members can be also given different levels of accessing the shared data (read-only, ability to write, delete etc.). If you have any questions about creating these Collaborative project folders, email bbu-support@helsinki.fi.
Backup and Restore of the files
Backups are made regularly from all data. Multiple revisions of files are saved. If you need a file restored, contact bbu-support@helsinki.fi
