Hannele Laivuori

Dr.  Laivuori is a research coordinator of the Sequencing Intiative Suomi (SISu) project (www.sisuproject.fi), an international collaboration between research groups aiming to build tools for genomic medicine. She is also a group leader and the expert secretary of the Research Council at the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Laivuori’s main research interests are genetics, molecular mechanisms, risk factors and later life implications of common pregnancy disorders such as pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes, which have enormous impact on global public health. These disorders share risk factors with cardiovascular diseases. The adverse intrauterine environment of these disorders may also permanently change the fetal physiology and predispose the offspring to physical and mental complications later in life. She is a principal investigator of the genetic arm of the Prediction and Prevention of Pre-eclampsia (PREDO) study and the Finnish Genetics of Pre-eclampsia Consortium (FINNPEC) and the Pre-eclampsia Family Cohort. In genetic and epigenetic studies of these carefully phenotyped cohorts, she uses latest next generation sequencing methodologies. She has a wide international collaborators network in obstetric medicine including the 7th Framework Programme EU-project InterPregGen, which is the largest investigation on the genetic factors underlying pre-eclampsia to date.
