According to the World Health Organization influenza A viruses (IAV) are among the leading causes of infectious diseases death. Various types of vaccines and antiviral drugs have been developed for protection and treatment of IAV infections. However, the viruses mutate rapidly and reduce the efficacy of the vaccinations and treatment. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop better modalities against IAV infections.
1. We sequence whole genomes of human IAVs. We utilize sequencing data for identification of virus markers associated with severity of IAV infections, for tracking and prediction of viral evolution, and in development of novel strategies for vaccine strain selection.
2. We discover novel antiviral agents, such as saliphenylhalamide, obatoclax, MK2206, SNS-032 and gemcitabine, and study their mechanisms of action and immunomodulating properties.Thereby, we are generating a new line of potential anti-IAV therapeutics.
