Collaborations in FIMM-EMBL International PhD Recruitment and Training
Recruitment through the FIMM-EMBL International PhD training begins as a joint, open, and international call from the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine. Although the selection process for the FIMM-EMBL students takes place at FIMM, the opportunity for collaboration in training and research within the Partnership is excellent and continual.
In the research areas of bioinformatics and computational systems biology and biomedicine, FIMM collaborates with Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT), a multi-disciplinary research institute focused on basic and applied research on information technology, based both at the University of Helsinki and Aalto University. Modern molecular medicine requires state-of-the-art methodologies in the analysis, visualization and modelling of large data sets. HIIT groups provide world-class excellence in these areas. Since 2012, the FIMM-EMBL call and selection were carried out in collaboration with HIIT as we sought outstanding candidates for positions in molecular medicine and bioinformatics.
In neuroscience, FIMM collaborates with the Neuroscience Center (NC) at the University of Helsinki, and during 2015 rotation students were jointly selected to FIMM and NC, further diversifying the research opportunities, increasing the multidisciplinarity and creativity in research ideas.
Finally, in doctoral training, FIMM collaborates with the UH Doctoral School in Health Sciences and its doctoral programs for content and transferrable skills education. Furthermore, the school and programs provide the structure for formal doctoral studies including the thesis committee and annual thesis committee meeting. In addition, the doctoral programs offer opportunities for salaried positions and grants for travel and research visits.
